Dr. Nick Maynard, a British surgeon, has recently returned from Gaza, where he was volunteering at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. He's been working in Gaza for 15 years, mentoring young doctors and training surgeons, but his role shifted after the war between Israel and Gaza began in October 2023.
Dr. Maynard describes a dire humanitarian situation, with severe malnutrition widespread among the population, particularly affecting children. The healthcare system is in collapse, and hospitals are struggling to provide care due to a lack of supplies and infrastructure damage. He's been operating on patients with catastrophic injuries, many caused by fragmentation bombs that release thousands of small metal pieces, tearing through the body and causing severe internal damage. Dr. Maynard believes these injuries are not accidental, but rather a result of deliberate targeting.
Access to food is extremely difficult, with many food distribution sites either destroyed or insufficient to meet the population's needs. This has led to chaos, rioting, and fighting over food, with some individuals being shot while trying to access aid. Dr. Maynard believes that Israel's actions are a systematic effort to dismantle Gaza's civilian infrastructure, with the aim of ethnic cleansing and removing the population from the land. He expresses shame that his government is complicit in these actions.
Dr. Maynard was awarded the Humanitarian Medal by King Charles III in February 2025 for his work in Gaza.
